Hobart Stand Mixer

by Jesse Kesler

Hobart, maker of the commercial line of Hobart stand mixers, made their first stand mixer in 1908. It was the original manufacturer of the Kitchenaid brand of stand mixers. Today, Hobart specializes in making large heavy duty mixers suitable for schools, hospitals, and restaurants. They first started manufacturing the Kitchenaid stand mixer aimed at the home use market in 1919.

Hobart eventually sold the Kitchenaid line to Whirlpool but continues to manufacture mixers with a capacity of 5 quarts to 60 quarts. The mixer line up from Hobart includes a commercial pizza dough mixer and a bread mixer that can hold up to 220 pounds of dough. They specialize in marketing to the restaurant and commercial user of heavy duty stand mixers and restaurant equipment.

They do make a smaller commercial counter top kitchen mixer that looks similar to the Kitchenaide line of mixers

The one drawback for the average consumer is the cost. The Hobart N50 costs approximately $2035 on most retail sites. Assuming you use this mixer in a commercial setting and that mixers such as this often last for 10 years or more the value becomes apparent. Amortized over 10 years this would equate to a cost of $203.50 per year. Less than $18 per month. Hobart is available in restaurant supply stores such as AceMart and local restaurant suppliers. Hobart has a convenient dealer locator page so you can find a vendor near you.

One option to save money and get a good value is to purchase a refurbished mixer. The advantage is that you can save up to 50% off the price of a new mixer. The value is that all the moving, wearable parts are replaced with new parts and you have a like new mixer for half the money that will usually last as long as a brand new one. The only down side is that refurbished mixers usually only come with a 90 warranty.

In summary the Hobart stand mixer is one of the most reliable brands on the market today. For the money it is a good value and if you buy it refurbished you may be able to save over $1000.
